The Bird & The Bean Music Studio offers voice, piano, composition/songwriting and music theory lessons to students of all ages and levels.
We focus mainly on classical/opera & art song, musical theatre and popular music.
Meet the founder of the studio and her dog, Bean!
Our goal is to bring our students to the highest level of musical excellency while offering them a unique and inspiring experience.
The studio is located in the Alta Vista area (Ottawa). Piano students are taught on a Yamaha upright piano (1st studio) or a Baldwin upright piano (2nd studio).
Helena Cheu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Laurentian University and Grade 9 Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music. She is currently completing a Masters degree in Composition from the University of Ottawa under the tutelage of Robert Rival. She has been teaching classical piano, musical theatre, guitar, ukulele and voice since 2019. In 2024, she was the vocal director of a production of High Society and the music director of a variety of new Canadian musicals in Kingston. She has a mastery in musical theatre repertoire through her key experience for musicals such as The Beauty and the Beast and Ride the Cyclone.
Music is such an integral part of the human experience, whether it's enjoying a tune with a cup of coffee or playing guitar with your buddies around a campfire. The best time to begin learning an instrument is during childhood, and the second best time is now.
Rawan Ismail is a Canadian soprano who recently completed her Master’s in Musical Interpretation at the Haute École de Musique de Genève (2025), after earning her undergraduate and graduate diplomas at McGill University in Montréal. She has appeared as a soloist in major choral-orchestral works such as Fauré’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah, was a finalist in the 2025 Concours Mélodies de Genève, and took part in the premiere of the contemporary opera Alice aux pays des merveilles at the Comédie de Genève.
In addition to her solo career, Rawan has extensive collaborative experience at McGill and HEM, working with pianists, instrumentalists, and fellow singers. She has also participated in masterclasses with François Le Roux, Christoph Strehl, Pauliina Tukiainen, Michael Schade, among others.
As a teacher, Rawan shares her passion for both voice and piano. She emphasizes solid technique, expressive freedom, and nurturing each student’s unique artistic identity.
